What is Continuing Education?
Continuing Education (CE) is different from a teacher’s initial training and regular line of work. CE strengthens teaching skills and professional practices of our teaching members. As stated in ATI’s Vision/Mission, continuing education allows our teaching members to “discuss, apply, research, and experiment with the discoveries of F. Matthias Alexander.”
Continuing Education (CE) within ATI falls into three categories:
1. Alexander Technique Study:
- personal study through exchanges with Alexander Technique colleagues, private lessons, workshops, post-graduate training, professional conferences or lectures;
- research and independent or advanced study leading to a documented result (Examples include a blog, an article for the Exchange, a book, or a video.);
- a structured self-reflective practice supervised by any certified or recognized Alexander Technique teacher that expands knowledge and professional teaching skills (Examples include journaling and data gathering.);
- assist or participate in teacher training programs post initial training.
2. Service to ATI in the form of board or committee participation and/or being an ATI Sponsor
3. Complementary study* and professional business practices
ATI includes complementary and supportive areas of study because it aids in the growth of its teachers.
- Complementary areas of study include but are not limited to subjects such as somatic education, philosophy and mindfulness practices, pedagogical methodology, and scientific fields of study. These studies can use the same form of study as those in number one.
- Supportive areas of study encourage teaching members in professional development and in business practices congruent with our code of ethics.
- Workshops, courses, training, professional conferences, networking groups, lectures, mentorship, coaching or independent research projects focused on growing professional business skills with a documented outcome, such as but not limited to: a blog, an article, a book, or video/YouTube.
Continuing Education, supported by outside funding (such as professional development grants or employer stipends) qualifies as continuing education activity for ATI.
Members select, record, and report their CE activities in at least two of the three categories above over the last three years. Please list your activities in the appropriate category and answer the questions below.

Q: How do I track my Continuing Education for my report? A: During the three years between reporting, you can track your Continuing Education in a journal, Word document, the ATI website's Continuing Education personal tracking tool, or any way you want.
Q: When is my CE reporting due? A: CE reporting is aligned with membership renewal, so you must have your Continuing Education reported by the end of March.
Q: How much is enough CE in a three-year period? A: A Teaching Member needs to 2 CE activities, from 2 different categories, within one 3-year period. CE activities fall into 3 categories: 1) Alexander Technique Study, 2) Service to ATI, and 3) Complementary and Supportive areas of study including business practices.
Q: How do I know what my reporting period is? A: ATI Teaching Members who are due to report their CE activity will receive an email in December. Generally, your CE report is due 3 years after becoming an ATI Teaching Member, and every 3 years after that.
Q: What if I don't have a "certificate" or other physical documentation for the CE that I've done? Does it still count? A: Yes, your activity will still count. Certificates or documents pertaining to a research project or demonstrating an independent are required.
Q: What happens if I don't report my Continuing Education activities? A: To remain a member in good standing, your Continuing Education reporting needs to be up to date.
Q: If I lead a workshop, does this count as Continuing Education? A: If you lead a workshop for the ATI Conference, this counts as Service to ATI.
