Sarah Barker

A classically trained actress, Sarah began her Alexander Technique teacher training with Marjorie Barstow in 1972 and counts Ms. Barstow as one of her most important mentors in life. The Alexander Technique has been a thread that stitches together the fabric of her fifty years of work in theatre, movement, and somatic studies. She teaches people to use conscious awareness and intention to improve one’s experience of life and art.Since retiring as Professor Emerita in 2019, she guest teaches at A.T. Teacher training schools and coaches advance students and performing artists privately.She is an innovator in her practice, intent on supporting a student’s independent learning. In 1978 Bantam Books published her book, The Alexander Technique: The Revolutionary Way to Use Your Body for Total Energy, among the first instruction books on the Alexander Technique. She produced Moving with Ease, an instructional video with computer generated images of AT directions and anatomy. The video was followed in 2020 by Allez-Up! her smart phone app, the first digital coaching app for practicing the Alexander Technique.She continues to embrace technology to advance students’ learning with online coaching and teaches through video conferencing all over the world.
